Testing 101
Abstract
A must attend for everyone who is not a tester (yet). Through real life examples you will get an introductionary answer to the different 'W' questions regarding testing: What is testing? Why do we need to test? What if we don't test? When do we to test? Where do we test? Who needs to test? How do we test? How much do we test? When is testing done? What language do testers speak?

Old Skool Testing
Abstract
Testing is more than just executing random tests on a developed system in an attempt to break it. Testing consists of an entire process and its goal is to measure whether the system is of sufficient quality. Since the first computer bug was detected in 1947, people have been testing computer and software systems. Different approaches to software development have arisen and testing had to adapt to fit each of these software development life cycle models. In this session you will learn about the testing process that fits the more old skool software development models. What are the different steps in this process? Which work products are needed and created during these steps? Who is responsible for each task? What are best practices but also what are pitfalls and tips & tricks?

New ways of testing
Abstract
Testing is more than just executing random tests on a developed system in an attempt to break it. Testing consists of an entire process, adapted to the applied software development lifecycle model, to measure whether the system is of sufficient quality. The publication of the Agile Manifesto in 2001 was an important milestone for the new approaches to software development. In this session you will learn how testers bring added value throughout the different phases of this 'new' way of working. The objectives of testing never changed, so what are the major differences with the old skool way of working? Do you need to use and create other work products? What about tasks and responsibilities? And again: what are best practices, pitfalls, tips & tricks?

Great Test Cases
Abstract
Testers don't just randomly execute things that seems appropriate to them. They work in a structured way to derive test cases from their sources of information, making sure that the required level of coverage is achieved. There are a lot of different techniques, each with a specific purpose, application area and dificulty. In this session an overview will be given of these techniques, looking at their practical usability.Even if you are familiar with lots of test techniques, you can still discover new techniques or rediscover techniques that you've forgotten. You will learn which technique is most suitable for each objective and kind of requirements. The application of these techniques will not be elaborated as it recommanded to learn them by doing, which is not feasible in a short session. |

Explore It!
Abstract
Sometimes testers are faced with limited time to test, or a limited amount of information to derive test cases from. Even though most test techniques fail in this situation, this shouldn't end your options as a tester to test an application. By using the right oracles and a good understanding of context, testers can still measure product quality through session-based testing using test charters. In this session, you will get an in-depth overview of how you can test an application with limited time or very little information.

Getting testing started
Abstract
There is not something like 'one approach to testing'. This being said, you already know what this session will be about.
Which factors influence how you could and should test? Which general approaches are available and how can you diversify your test approach to fit your current situation? What and how should it be documented? What are things to consider when planning your test approach? And not to forget: what are best practices, pitfalls, and tips & tricks?

Successful estimations
Abstract
One question you hear a lot is ""How much time do you need to test this?". Knowing when and at what cost a product is of sufficient quality is important, especially with the ever-growing need to decrease the time-to-market.
An answer to this question can never be given right away and it usually starts with 'it depends'. Making predictions about the future is trying to manage uncertainties, yet you cannot allocate resources if you have no idea how many of them are needed or for how long. In this session we'll explore different techniques to make estimations regarding the required resources to test something. You'll discover which factors have an influence on this estimation, but also the advantages and disadvantages of each of these techniques. Most likely you're still not able to answer the question right away, but at least you know where to look for it.

Making metrics work
Abstract
Testing is done to answer a number of questions people have regarding the application that has been developed. Can we go live? What risks have been covered? How many effort has been put into testing this? What problems occured? How accurate were our estimations? How much did it cost us (so far)? The answers to all these questions are given in reports, tailored to the specific needs of the target audience. In this session we will discuss different types of reports, their target audience, their level of detail, and other important aspects.

Essential Testing Skills
Abstract
Ask 10 people what the ideal tester looks like and you will get 11 different profiles. Just like there is no single approach to testing, there is also no single profile that fits them all. If you look into the details of these profiles, you will find some common characteristics. Next to a passion for quality, there are more characteristics any good tester should possess. Other characteristics depend on the role and the tasks of a tester.
In this session you will get an overview of the different skills a tester should and could master. You will gain interesting insights in the never-ending discussion on being a specialist or a generalist, looking at T-, Pi- and Comb-shaped profiles. You will also learn what skills are needed to shift left, right and who knows even up ...

Keep your tests under control
Abstract
If everything went as planned, life would be much easier. Unfortunately, a lot of things might turn out differently than we expected. In every project, we have to monitor closely whether everything is going according to plan. If not, we need to take action to keep the train running, making changes to our plan or our expectations. In this session important aspects for this monitoring and controlling of test projects are investigated, looking for best practices, pitfalls and tips & tricks, spiced up with real life examples.

Testing Service Management
Abstract
An expert from CTG's IT service management unit will explain what proper service and defined practices is all about. What are the advantages? What are possible pitfalls? And are these principles also applicable for the Agile development models? What is the role of a tester is all of this? And what does ITIL have to do with this? Developers have all kinds of tools to deliver (updates to) working software quickly. By the time you finish your test case, the software may already be updated a couple of times. How can testers reliably measure the quality of an ever-changing piece of software? The key is to have a proper configuration and change the management process in place.

Optimize your testing (organization)
Abstract
Once you have determined your test approach and estimated the required resources, you can organize your tests and your team. How to organize these depends among other things, on the testing tasks, roles, development model, required level of independence and availability and knowledge levels of your testers.
In this session you will learn about the different roles in a testing process, be it old skool or rather Agile. You will discover different ways to organize your testing team and how to manage your testing process.

Testing Beyond the obvious: non-functional testing
Abstract
A lot of people claim that a product is of good quality, if it does what it's supposed to do without errors. Functionality is indeed an important contributor to the quality of your system, but if you don't understand the interface, or if your system takes 5 minutes to respond, you are not happy with the quality either. The focus on non-functional testing is increasing every day. Usability, security and performance - just to name a few quality attributes - are becoming more and more important and systems that do not comply with the current expectations of their end-users in these, won't have a long lifespan.
In this session the ISO 25010 standard on quality attributes for software products is elaborated in detail. You will learn how to test for these different aspects and how tools can help you getting better results.

Test Automation: Retroactive vs Proactive
Abstract
No, you don't need a master degree in programming to attend this session on test automation. Even though test automation may appear very technical, it is something all of you can do, to a certain extent. Having a computer executing tasks for us, frees our time to do more interesting and challenging things.
In this session you will discover different types of test automation, both for the retroactive [after the system has been developed] and the proactive [before the system is being developed] approaches to test automation. For each type, you will learn the advantages, disadvantages and pitfalls, but also receive soms tips and tricks. At the end of the session, you would also like to start automation. Wanna bet?

Improve your testing with TMMi
Abstract
The Test Maturity Model integration (
TMMi) has a rapidly growing uptake and is now the de-facto world-wide standard for test process improvement. It’s growing popularity is based upon it being the only independent test process improvement model, and the simple presentation of maturity levels that it provides. The mistaken belief is that the TMMi and Agile approaches are at odds. Agile approaches and TMMi can not only co-exist, but successfully integrate to bring substantial benefits to both Agile and traditional development and testing organizations. Examples will be shown on how TMMi and Agile methods can effectively work together. The challenge is to apply lean principles and practices to empower Agile practices and facilitate TMMi practices. Whatever you do a key to success is always to have the business needs and objectives drive the improvement process. Erik has much practical experience in implementing the TMMi model, in both traditional and Agile environments, and assisting organizations improve the way they test. Many practical experiences and results achieved are presented. The latest developments around the TMMi will also be discussed, e.g., the results world-wide TMMi user survey and the establishment of TMMi Local Chapters.

Testing (with) Artificial Intelligence
Abstract
Judgement day is near! Or at least that's what most people think when they hear about AI. The most important thing you should now is that AI is nothing more than a computer system solving problems usually solved by humans. AI can be used in a lot of different domains: not only self-driving cars, chatbots and deepfakes, but also... testing!
One of the major challenges with AI is knowing whether the AI system has been trained properly. To answer this question, the AI system has to be tested. Not only to see whether it has been properly trained, but also to assess whether the learned can be applied in the real world.
In this session you will get a brief introduction on testing of AI systems. What are the differences with non-AI software systems? What are the possible (new) risks with AI systems and what should you do to mitigate these? On top of that, you will get a peek preview of how AI could be used to facilitate your testing. Like most AI systems, there is still a long way to go, but the destination is very promising!

Perfect Performance Testing
Abstract
20 years ago in 2001, Daft Punk already knew that things had to be harder, better, faster and stronger. Having a good performing system has become crucial and performance is a quality aspect that is here to stay.
With the ever increasing speed and size of systems, it's no longer an option to put a number of people in a room and use a stopwatch to time their actions in the system. Tools are indispensible to measure whether your system performance meets the expectations and whether it would continue to do so in the future as well. CTG's performance expert, Wim Demey will explain the current status of performance testing and what you should consider when you want to start testing your system performance, looking deeper into best practices, pitfalls and tips & tricks.
